Vista Residence

Pasadena, California

Vista Residence reimagines a 2,000 Sqft mid-century ranch home in Pasadena as a contemporary sanctuary — calm, grounded, and deeply connected to the rituals of everyday life.

The design is guided by the idea of Kansei: the Japanese philosophy and quiet emotional response a space can produce through light, material, proportion, and stillness.

The renovation unfolds through a series of calm interior moments. A compressed entry gives way to warmer, more tactile rooms; screens, built-ins, and framed openings create privacy without closing the house down; the living, dining, kitchen, and family spaces are gathered around the patio as the emotional center of the home. Rather than treating the ranch as casual or anonymous, the design gives it atmosphere — turning its low, familiar plan into something more intimate, sensory, and quietly transportive.

The result is a family home with a meditative quality: relaxed, grounded, and deeply livable, but with enough richness and tension to feel memorable.
